Superorganism

Overview

Superorganism’s second album was released on 15th July and its title, World Wide Pop, is the inspiration behind a post-release activation to map their world of interests.

In order to access the site, users have to either connect their Spotify account or sign up to the band’s mailing list.

“Our beautiful second album baby World Wide Pop can now be heard, seen, and loved by all,” say the band on the landing page when you connect. “We’ve left you memories, travel recomms and our fav tunes from around the globe.”

The map is peppered with whale logos (the band’s default mascot/avatar). The ones in yellow are simply dates on their world tour with a click-through to buy tickets, but the ones in orange are much more interesting.

Some are droll, like when you click on South Dakota in the US, the pop-up window lists Mount Rushmore as a key tourist attraction but adds, “Mount Rushmore is weird as hell, why make that tho.”

Others fare better with personal comments and memories from the band. They describe Montana as, “Beautiful, expansive place that overwhelms me with feelings of infiniteness… and I WILL be owning a ranch here at some point tyvm.” Minneapolis has a recommendation for a hamburger joint the band members particularly favour.

Belfast is celebrated as a city where Franz Ferdinand dedicated ‘Take Me Out’ to the band while Dublin is noted for its audience response. “Played some of our best shows here… the Irish really do go OFF. Mid set, we received a tray of Murphy’s Stout to drink on stage – yes please!”

Fans of the band also pop up – with Budapest being the place where a fan gave the band’s singer Orono a Tamagotchi and they are photographed together with it.

There are also local music recommendations from different countries, with pop-up YouTube players letting you hear local music from assorted places.

It will almost certainly be added to as they continue to tour this year and stands as a fun, slightly irreverent and musically educational snapshot of the band and their cultural interests.
