Freddie Mercury/Queen

Overview

Do you fancy seeing how your vocals compare to the singing chops of Freddie Mercury? The legendary lungsmith knew a thing or two about belting them out and, as anyone else who performed at Live Aid in 1985 will tell you, going larynx to larynx with him is not for the faint-hearted.

For those feeling bold or foolish enough to try, Google has created an AI-powered singing challenge with what they are calling a ‘FreddieMeter’. It says, “This experiment uses new, on-device machine learning models developed by Google Research to see how close your timbre, pitch, and melody are to Freddie’s. Your audio doesn’t get uploaded to servers to be analyzed, so your vocals stay private.”

There is also an associated #FreddieChallenge hashtag to push people online to give it their best shot, challenge their friends and make a charitable donation. The whole thing is there to raise awareness of and funds for the Mercury Phoenix Trust, set up in the singer’s name, to help fight AIDS globally. In the past 27 years, the trust has funded over 1,000 projects across 56 countries, giving away over $17m in total.

There are four Queen songs to choose from (‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, ‘Somebody To Love’ and ‘We Are the Champions’ – all pretty easy, vocally demanding songs, eh?)

music:)ally tried it out, but our vocals are less Freddie Mercury and more like an accordion climbing the stairs, so we ended up with a score of 31%. But the FreddieMeter is fun, clever, and it raises money for a good cause. What’s not to like?
