We have written a lot in the past about Norwegian DJ and producer Alan Walker and his approach to letting his breakthrough track ‘Faded’ be used by online gamers – just as long as they linked back to the official video on YouTube (now at 2.1bn views) or DSPs where it could be monetised.
While YouTube is still enormously important to him – and having 20m subscribers on his official channel is not to be sniffed at – he is spreading his digital wings somewhat to launch the #differentworld challenge on TikTok, with ‘Different World’ also conveniently being the title of his new single.
The listing under the video asks that fans “do something environmentally friendly while dressed in a black hoodie and mask” and in Walker’s first official video for the challenge, he is filmed walking along in the snow as the track plays.
He spots a discarded plastic bottle on the ground, he picks it up, flips it into a bin and then turns to the camera to make an almost-heart shape with his hands (his signature “I Potato You” gesture). In his second video, he goes to a grocery store, refuses to take a plastic carrier bag from the cashier and instead puts his shopping (bananas, a kiwi, a pear and a box of granola) in his hood and walks down the street like that.
The challenge was run in 48 countries and ended on 17th January, with the creators of the 60 best fan-generated videos winning prizes, including Alan Walker merchandise.
“I want to use my voice to raise awareness on climate change and the environment where we live, and TikTok is a great partner to do so, as it has become a dynamic platform for expression,” said Walker in a press statement.
At the time of writing, there were 43.4m views listed across the #differentworld hashtag on TikTok as well as pages and pages of fans doing their creative spin on the challenge. All in all, a success.
