After dominating Christmas playlists (nine of his 10 biggest songs on Spotify are from his Christmas album), Michael Bublé is fully rested and is returning with a new Alexa skill to push his love (stylised as ♥ ) album and his UK arena tour in May and June.
Called Bublé Daily, the skill is triggered when users issue certain commands – “Alexa, tell me about Michael Bublé”; “Alexa, open Bublé Daily” – and is, at launch, available in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, India, Italy, Japan, New Zealand and Spain.
Each day a new quote from the singer is added to the skill, presumably to get fans to use it on a daily basis as opposed to treating it as a one-off gimmick.
(When sandbox tested it, we got him saying, “My favourite place to go with my family is [his child says “Disneyland”] Disneyland. That’s right, Elias. Check back tomorrow. I’ll have something new to say to you then.”)
Amazon says this will be changed every day where he will deliver “a story, a fact or an inspirational quote”. It adds that he has pre-recorded “personally recorded hundreds of messages” to use on the skill.
He has also created a YouTube video showing how it all works. While other pop acts – notably Paloma Faith and Little Mix – have developed their own Alexa skill, this is the most advanced one to date.
“‘Bublé Daily’ represents an insight into how Alexa skills will be embraced by the music industry,” runs the press statement. “It’s one of the first ever multimodal skills, which utilises both audio and video content featuring Michael on compatible devices, such as the new generation of Echo devices, such as the Echo Show. It’s also one of the first artist Alexa skills that is launched via a custom command.”
The fact he reveals his favourite pizza is ham and pineapple could, however, be a bridge too far for some fans.
