Steve Aoki

Overview

One may think that yet another app offering lip-syncing is gilding the social media lily somewhat, but the case of Amazer is slightly different. It describes itself as the “global K-pop video community” app for fans to make “K-pop themed dance, lipsync, fanart, selfie videos”. Leading K-pop acts like BTS, Blackpink, Twice, Exo and Got7 all have stickers on the app.

And where K-pop acts go, Western acts are certain to follow, hoping for some of that lovely international crossover success. And so to Steve Aoki. The EDM star is no stranger to putting his fingers in digital pies – when he’s not flinging cakes at his audience as part of his act, of course – and has already appeared in the Star Trek Fleet Command mobile game this year.

Now he’s popping up on Amazer to promote ‘Play It Cool’, his collaboration with K-poppers Monsta X which was released earlier this year (and which came out in different versions with vocals in both English and Korean).

As with TikTok, fans are presented with the now-standard #playitcoolchallenge in Amazer, where they are encouraged to upload videos of themselves lip-syncing and dancing to the track. The twist here is that they can add an AR version of the DJ’s face as well as having a range of digital stickers to attach to their efforts.

Aoki was pushing it on his Twitter feed (where he has just shy of 8.5m followers) on 21st May. “If the #PlayitcoolChallenge_amazer hashtag becomes a Worldwide trend, I`ll give away @ OfficialMonstaX autographed t-shirts to a few lucky people!” he tweeted along with a video of him in the studio also promoting the competition and the Amazer app.

And, yes, there are prizes for the uploaded videos. The best three videos, as selected by Aoki, will win some merchandise – which seems somewhat underwhelming given how hard he is pushing this.
