Bombay Bicycle Club or Bill Ryder- Jones due to their names or Kraftwerk due to their other great love outside of computers might have been the obvious candidates to partner with SoulCycle, the indoor cycling brand; but the company has gone the counterintuitive route and partnered instead with EDM duo Chainsmokers.
Maybe it’s the fact that bikes have chains that led SoulCycle here; or maybe it was because Chainsmokers were willing and able to sign up despite the incredible inappropriateness of their name. No matter. It’s here now and it’s happening.
It is all part of the Sound By SoulCycle series on Apple Music and is the first artist-centric playlist from the brand on the streaming service. It already has themed playlists (You Got This, Recharge Your Soul, Happy Place, Sweat It Out and so on), but the Sound By SoulCycle X The Chainsmokers playlist runs for just under an hour and there is a lot of Chainsmokers on there – with only two of the 15 tracks not having any direct Chainsmokers involvement.
There is also a sportswear collaboration between the act and the fitness company on a three-piece collection (a tank top, a sweatshirt and a T-shirt if you’re interested) and the Chainsmokers appeared at a class at SoulCycle’s studio in Wynn Plaza in Las Vegas in December to promote the partnership. This is the same Wynn Plaza where they are coincidentally in the middle of a three-year residency.
On top of this, there were a further 17 Chainsmokers-themed rides happening at SoulCycle studios in the US in late December. The duo are obviously rolling their sleeves up and breaking a sweat for the brand, but it perhaps would have had more impact if it was with a musical act already involved in cycling. Doing a mix for a cycling workout is one thing; being the “face” of a cycling brand is another thing entirely.
