Rivers Cuomo is the frontman of US alternative rock band Weezer. Since 1994, they have released 15 studio albums and he has also released assorted solo albums.
In 2007, he released the Alone album of home recordings and followed that up with one in 2008, one in 2009 and one in 2011. The Alone… series really moved up through the gears in 2020 and 2021 where he released a further 10 albums as part of the project.
This is the long way round to say that he is not scared of being prolific. So what do you do when you have built up a huge catalogue of studio albums and demos? You turn them into your very own DSP, of course. Well, sort of.
With incredible timing given the political fallout over the Joe Rogan Experience podcast on the leading music subscription service that was just happening, Cuomo tweeted, “Tired of Spotify? Come on over to Weezify.”
He added a series of links to the iOS App Store and Google Play to download the official Weezify app.
It is described in the store listing as, “A Spotify-like player for all of River Cuomo’s demos (1975-2017).” It then goes on to say there are close to 3,500 demos on there. That’s not a typo. That’s three-and-a-half-thousand demos on the app. There are also a series of curated playlists.
“I made this app myself,” he says. “It took me all of 2021 to make. I hope you like it.”
It is not a truly Spotify-like player (i.e. there is no free tier for on-demand plays, but rather a Pandora-style radio player serving up randomised tracks) and it is actually more akin to Bandcamp or even iTunes.
You can buy bundles of tracks for a relative pittance. Alone XIII: The Pacific Daydream Years collection, for example, has 218 demos and costs just $9. Or you can go for broke with the Alone XI: The EWBAITE Years collection which has a staggering 1,190 demos and also costs $9.
One collection, however, only has 39 demos and sells at the same $9 price point. For non-fans, this flat pricing but inconsistency in bundle sizes may seem strange; but if you are a fan then you will just want all the music you can get and take your time wading through it.
As such, it’s one of the most impressive and ambitious lockdown projects we have seen in digital music.
